As there's some sad mendacious Peeping Toms about, most of these pages are no longer available on the web.

Unfortunately, you may have to do a brief Yahoo / Flickr registration to see them, once I've invited you to be one of "My Friends" on Flickr.

NZ / UK Swap?

I'm Roger Nunn. I'm a GP in Filey on the North Yorkshire Coast near Scarborough, and I'm keen to swap with a GP in New Zealand for a period of between two and six months, possibly around the first half of 2008. You live in my house, drive my cars- ditto me in yours.

I'm 52 years old, in good health. I trained in Sheffield, then worked in Christchurch and other places overseas for several years before finally settling in Filey in 1984. I ran TK WIlliams' (an ex PRNZCGP) practice in Christchurch as a long term locum for 18 months in the early 1980s'. In 1996, I very successfully swapped with Dr Paul Hendy in Taradale in Napier for six months- Paul liked us so much that he subsequently came back and joined us a GP Registrar for a further 6 months.  What worked well then, and what I'd want to repeat, is that we each do  a "locum for locum" (ie, we each work for each other as locum, and no money actually changes hands) basis.

I've been a GP Trainer since 1989. I do usual Minor Surgery in the UK, Child Surveillance, Ante & Postal (though not Intra-Partum nowadays) Care, and fit IUCDs. I'm reasonably computer literate- we use Vision as our clinical system, and are paper- free. The Practice is four partners, with an excellent team led by a wonderful Practice Manager. Our Practice Nurses are increasingly triaging emergencies for us. We all get involved in teaching our GP Registrars, (though I am the Lead on this, and undertake the bulk of it) and we all will be involved in teaching Medical Students from Hull & York Medical School and 2nd year out "F2s". Our Out of Hours are covered by the PCT- we stop work at 6pm, and do no week-ends, though we could earn extra by doing the work, if we wished. We have a day off each week, apart from odd periods of exceptional high demand, and hence usually just work four days a week. However, I've discussed the swap with my partners, who feel that in view of the fact that an "Elective Swappee" would not be taking on a full administrative load( though there would still be day to day clinical "paperwork", of course), it is fair to recognise this by asking a locum to do 9 sessions a week. I usually manage a gap of an hour or two in the middle of each day to get a run or go to the gym.

I live in Hunmanby, a village three miles away from Filey, and ten miles away from Scarborough. York is 45 minutes away, Leeds just over an hour, and London or Edinburgh four hours away. There are wonderful weekend breaks on offer from Hull via the over night ferry - Brugges, Amsterdam, and the like. There's cheap flights to places like Venice, Prague, Barcelona, Dublin, Geneva,  Paris etc  for £30 or £40 - sometimes less-  from Leeds and other airports in the North. Personal favourites for me are the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, 2 - 2 1/2 hours distant.

My house is a mix of 1840s- originally the village cobbler's workshop, and the administration offices for the estate of the local baronet. We extended it 1990. There's five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a study and kids' playroom, as well as the usual sort of rooms. See pictures at bottom. The house is wired for broadband with several computers. What worked well last time I did a swap is that we each paid our own "Discretionary " expenses in the "Guest" country (electricity, heating and the like), whilst fixed costs (rates, house insurances etc) were paid by the "Host".

I'm not particularly interested in cars, but there'd be a Peugeot 307 estate and possibly a Peugeot 206 estate. If you're in to sailing, windsurfing or kiting, there'd be my kit there- I've got a full-on 2 man trapeze skiff called a Spice, a smaller Topaz, and lots of windsurfing and kiting kit, both for kite boarding and kite and mountain-board buggying on the beach.

I'm reasonably amicably separated from Anne, a Sister in Recovery, who lives ten miles away in Scarborough. I've three kids, Catriona, who's at University; Ali & Jamie, currently 17 and 12 respectively, who are at a local school, and come and go between Anne and myself. I'd hope some or all of them might come and join me for some time in school holidays in if I can sort something out in NZ.

I'm looking for a swap with a reliable colleague, probably based in one of NZ's larger towns or cities.  He or she would work in a group with other supporting colleagues. As a lone bloke, a remote and isolated single-handed practice wouldn't appeal, and neither would any middle of the night work. I'd value a swap with a colleague who's set things up to achieve a similar work-life balance to mine, and is achieving a good professional job, as well as enjoying life. He or she has got to satisfy my partners they're a safe pair of hands- otherwise, I get pulled home! But they're a really great bunch, really, you'll enjoy working with them!

I reckon I'm dependable, flexible, easy to get on with, and a competent clinician. I've got a very pleasant life-style in a good practice  in a small rural coastal town.  I relish travel and new challenges.

If you think we could talk turkey, drop me an E Mail on roger_nunn@yahoo.co.uk asap

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Interested by what you’ve read so far? Now, here’s the rub. The UK GMC, in their infinite wisdom, reckon that a Medical graduate from Tallinn, Warsaw or Athens is the same as a home grown, and recognise the qualification, ahead of someone from Dunedin or Auckland. Furthermore, unless you’ve done a UK GP Vocational Training within the last 10 minutes- well, perhaps a little longer- they’re not likely to be over impressed, and so won’t make it easy for me to swap with you. I don’t really know what the NZ picture is now, though I’d imagine that as as a minimum , I’ve got to be “supervised” by some Kiwi medical graduate of at least two days out of medical school.
