The NHS & The Surgery

The Surgery is a private business owned controlled and run by the four partners. We have an agreement with the NHS to provide "Personal Medical Services" to people registered on our list. Please understand, not all of our services are covered by the NHS. For instance, there is a charge for some services, such as private medical certificates.

We contract with Scarborough Whitby and Ryedale Primary Care Trust  to provide "Personal Medical Services" (PMS) to our list of approximately 8,400 patients.

Our Premises

The current surgery premises were built in 1989 by the then partners. The building is owned and maintained  by the Partners for the good of the people of Filey, not by the NHS. Please help us to look after it, just as you would if you were a guest in somebody elses's house. Please report any abuse you might see, possibly by calling the police if out of hours.

GP Training

We are a Training Practice. We work alongside General Practice Registrars, overseeing their professional development, and benefiting from the new up to date skills they bring to the practice. From time to time, we may ask you if we may make videos of your consultation with the doctor, so that we may discuss that doctor might alter his consulting for the better. All videos will be treated with the same degree of confidentiality that your medical records are. If you would rather not give permission for your consultation to be videoed, please simply say "no" when asked. No-one will be upset or offended in any way.

As a Training Practice, we are regularly inspected by outside visiting teams, who may inspect your medical records to ensure that they are up to scratch. Occasionally, not all the inspection team will be doctors, though they would treat your records as absolutely confidential. If you would prefer that your records are not open to this inspection , please let us know.

Computers & The Surgery

Your medical records are maintained on a computer system. You have full statutory access to inspect them under the Data Protection Act, upon payment of the statutory fee.

Accident & Emergency & The Surgery

Please understand that we offer a range of medical services such as a normal General Practice might offer. We are not a Minor Injuries Unit. We are not an Accident & Emergency Department. All Accidents that require immediate treatment, eg lacerations etc. should be taken straight to A&E at Scarborough Hospital.

Summer Holidaymakers' Surgeries

The Emergency Medical Services and ourselves cover the Holiday Parks in the area. We offer appointments at the Filey Surgery (01723 515881) to holiday makers who are able to get to the surgery, by taxi if necessary.

The Emergency Services cover those patients so unwell they cannot be moved on 999, or via NHS Direct.

Women Doctors at The Filey Surgery

When we look for a new Doctor, the law says we have to consider all applicants equally, and appoint the very best applicant. It is ILLEGAL to consider whether they are man or woman. Whilst we actively encourage women doctors to apply for any vacancies we have, legally we must appoint the very best applicant for the vacant position, be they man or woman.

If you have a problem that you would prefer to discuss with a woman, why not make an appointment to speak to one of our Practice Nurses? They can often help you with "Women's Problems" without you having to see a male doctor.

Dental Problems

The Doctors at the Filey Surgery are not trained to deal with Dental Problems. The dentist is.

If you are registered with a dental practice on the NHS or privately, you should contact them first. Their phone lines will provide details of the Emergency Dentist on call.

Unregistered patients can get treatment at Northway Clinic in Northway - phone 342712.

NHS Dental Treatment can be found via NHS DIrect on 0845 4647

If all else fails, you should attend Scarborough Hospital Accident & Emergency Department. There is always an on call Oral Surgeon available for advice via A&E.
